There were about 8,000 of the drugs in the CVS survey — almost 15 percent of the total — including the generic drugs. That included about 2,500 of the best-selling products. That number includes 10 of the best-selling drugs — including the brand-name drugs Levitra, Cialis and Staxyn.
CVS had the best price at $3.55 per pill, and it’s a bit cheaper for the rest of the drugs, CVS said. The cost of Viagra, the CVS drug, was about $2.50 to $3.50 for an average of 16 pills in the CVS survey.
The company said the average price of the medications is about $1,500 a year.
A CVS spokesman said the FDA has taken an “excessive” price increase, but that the price has not been increased, and that the company is not making any changes to the price. He added that the average price for the drugs is about $1,500 to $1,700 for the best-selling products.
CVS also said its price for Viagra is “unprecedented.”
The company said it will continue to provide the drugs and provide a list of other benefits.
But Zuckerman said the company does not take any measures to make sure the drug is safe.
“We have to be cautious,” he said. “We can’t just do a price check to make sure it’s safe.”
